NORFOLK. A pipelayer with a side boom and a team of workers laying a section of the Fens gas pipeline into a trench.
Work on laying the Fens gas pipeline started in June 1967 and was a joint venture between Laing Civil Engineering and French companies Entrepose and Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM) for the Gas Council. Over 600 men worked on the project to lay 36 inch diameter steel pipes starting at West Winch in Norfolk and running to where it linked up with the next contract at Woodcroft Castle in Cambridgeshire. The pipeline crossed four rivers and numerous dykes and ditches

This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the Fens gas pipeline in Norfolk during the 1960s. In this image, a pipelayer with an impressive side boom is seen alongside a dedicated team of workers as they diligently lay a section of the pipeline into a trench. The Fens gas pipeline project commenced in June 1967 through a collaborative effort between Laing Civil Engineering and French companies Entrepose and Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM), all working under the Gas Council. With over 600 men involved, their collective efforts focused on laying 36-inch diameter steel pipes that stretched from West Winch in Norfolk to Woodcroft Castle in Cambridgeshire, where it connected with another contract. The challenging terrain presented numerous obstacles along its path, including four rivers and countless dykes and ditches. However, these determined individuals persevered through their unwavering commitment to completing this vital infrastructure project. This photograph not only showcases the machinery used for such an undertaking but also highlights the dedication and teamwork displayed by these hardworking individuals. It serves as a testament to their contribution towards ensuring efficient gas supply for future generations. Preserved within Historic England's archive collection, this remarkable image offers us insight into an important chapter of engineering history while reminding us of the immense effort required to bring essential services to our communities.
