EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles XIV John, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte (1763-1844): A Regal Figure in Swedish and Norwegian History This stunning oil on canvas painting depicts Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, who later became King Charles XIV John of Sweden and Norway, and Marshal of France under Napoleon I. The portrait, created in the late 18th or early 19th century, is now housed in the National Museum of Fine Arts in Stockholm, Sweden. Born in Pau, France, Bernadotte rose to prominence during the French Revolutionary Wars, earning the title of Marshal of France in 1804. In 1810, he was elected Crown Prince of Sweden, and upon the death of King Charles XIII in 1818, Bernadotte ascended to the throne as King Charles XIV John. He also became King of Norway in 1814. The portrait showcases Bernadotte's regal bearing and masculine presence. He is depicted wearing the uniform of a Swedish field marshal, complete with the Order of the Seraphim, the highest order of chivalry in Sweden. The rich colors and intricate details of the painting capture the essence of the man and the historical significance of his reign. Bernadotte's rule was marked by modernization and reforms, including the establishment of a constitutional monarchy and the introduction of a new legal code. He is also remembered for his role in the Napoleonic Wars and his efforts to strengthen Sweden's position in Europe. This portrait is a testament to Bernadotte's complex and influential role in both Swedish and Norwegian history, as well as European history more broadly. It is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of the Nordic region or the Napoleonic Wars.
