This photograph captures the historic moment when the Wright Brothers, Orville (left) and Wilbur (right), successfully launched their glider, named the Flyer I, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1911. The brothers, who are dressed in heavy coats and goggles, are seen standing next to their aircraft, which is poised on the sandy beach. The wind in their sails, they appear focused and determined, their eyes fixed on the horizon. The Wright Brothers had first achieved powered, controlled, and sustained flight in their Wright Flyer in 1903, but this glider flight was a crucial step in their quest to develop a practical airplane. By testing their designs in a wind tunnel and through extensive flight trials, they were able to refine their understanding of aerodynamics and the principles of flight. The glider, which had a wingspan of 12.3 meters (40 feet), was launched by a team of helpers who ran alongside it, pushing it into the wind.
