This engraved portrait captures the triumphant moment of Hippia, the winning horse in the historic 1867 Oaks Horse Race. The Oaks, one of the most prestigious and longest-running races in the history of horse racing, took place on Epsom Downs in Surrey, England on June 7, 1867. Hippia, a chestnut mare, was ridden by jockey J.P. Webster and owned by the influential 7th Earl of Ilchester. The 1867 Oaks was particularly significant as it marked the first time that the race was run under the new rules of the Jockey Club, which included the introduction of the weight-for-age system and the requirement for horses to carry specific colors. These changes were designed to make the race fairer and more transparent, and they set the template for modern horse racing.
