EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of introduction between Mwanga III, the powerful and enigmatic Kabaka (King) of Buganda in Uganda, and the esteemed British colonial figure, Lord Frederick John Dealtry Lugard, in 1894. The image is taken from "The Rise of Our East African Empire," a historical account penned by Lugard himself in 1893. At the time of this encounter, Mwanga III, the third monarch of the powerful Buganda Kingdom, was a formidable leader, known for his strength and cunning. He had previously led a rebellion against the British, who had sought to assert their influence in the region. However, Mwanga's power was waning, and he was now seeking an alliance with the British to strengthen his position against his rivals. Lord Lugard, a Captain in the British Army and later becoming a Baron, was a key figure in the British colonial expansion in Africa. He had played a significant role in the suppression of the rebellion against British rule in Buganda and was now seeking to establish a protectorate over the kingdom. The photograph shows Mwanga III seated on a throne, dressed in traditional regalia, with a large ivory tusker's horn in his hand. Lugard stands before him, dressed in military uniform, with a confident and determined expression on his face. The setting is a grand, open-air courtyard, with attendants and onlookers gathered around. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complex and dynamic interactions between African leaders and European colonial powers during the late 1800s. It highlights the intricacies of diplomacy and alliances during a time of great change and upheaval in African history.
