EDITORS COMMENTS
John Howson (1557-1632), the esteemed Bishop of Durham, is depicted in this evocative portrait. Howson was born in Yorkshire, England, and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he earned a reputation as a brilliant scholar. In 1596, he was appointed Bishop of Worcester, and in 1604, he succeeded to the see of Durham. During his tenure as Bishop of Durham, Howson was known for his piety, learning, and administrative abilities. He was a strong supporter of the Anglican Church and played a significant role in the implementation of the Book of Common Prayer in the diocese. Howson also worked to improve the education of the clergy and the welfare of the poor in his diocese. This portrait, likely painted during Howson's time as Bishop of Durham, captures the bishop in his ecclesiastical robes, holding a pastoral staff and a copy of the Bible. The intricately detailed robe, adorned with gold embroidery and fur trim, reflects the wealth and status of the bishop. The serious expression on Howson's face conveys the gravity of his role as a spiritual leader and the weight of responsibility he bore for the souls of his flock. The background of the portrait features a landscape with a castle and a river, symbolizing the power and authority of the Bishop of Durham, who held both secular and spiritual jurisdiction over the County Palatine of Durham. The castle also represents the historical significance of the see of Durham, which had been an important center of power and learning since the Middle Ages. John Howson's legacy as Bishop of Durham endures to this day, and this portrait serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to the Anglican Church and the people of the North East of England.
