EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, a young Mary Goelet, later known as the Duchess of Roxburghe, is captured at the tender age of four, lying contentedly in a hammock. Born in the United States as Mary Leiter Goelet in 1897, she would later become an American heiress of considerable wealth and renown. The daughter of Ogden Goelet and Mary Leiter, she was part of a prominent New York family with deep social and financial connections. As the Gilded Age drew to a close, numerous impoverished British peers sought to improve their fortunes by marrying wealthy American heiresses. In 1903, Mary, then just sixteen years old, married Henry Innes-Kerr, the 8th Duke of Roxburghe, in a lavish ceremony held at St. George's Hanover Square in London. The Duke, who had been struggling financially, was delighted to secure a dowry reportedly worth some $20 million. With her marriage to the Duke, Mary became the Duchess of Roxburghe and the chatelaine of some of the most esteemed stately homes in England, including the grand Floors Castle in Roxburghshire. The union brought prestige and wealth to both parties, and the Duchess became a prominent figure in British high society. This charming image of a young Mary Goelet, captured in her childhood innocence, offers a glimpse into the life of an American heiress who would later become a British Duchess. The photograph, taken in the early 20th century, is a testament to the social and financial connections that bound the old world of Europe and the new world of America during this period.
