EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate engraving is a captivating representation of two intriguing marine creatures, the Black Goby (Gobius niger) and the Highfin Goby (Gobionellus oceanicus), from the Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish by the renowned Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm. Published in Augsburg in 1804, this encyclopedia was Wilhelm's significant contribution to the field of ichthyology, showcasing his meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy. The Black Goby, depicted on the left, is a small, slender fish with a dark, almost black coloration, earning it its name. Its body is adorned with small, white spots, and its dorsal and anal fins are edged with a distinct, white border. The Highfin Goby, on the right, is characterized by its elongated dorsal and anal fins, which are much larger than those of the Black Goby. Its body is a mottled brown color with darker spots and stripes. Wilhelm's masterful engraving not only captures the physical attributes of these fish but also their unique personalities. The Black Goby appears alert and curious, its eyes fixed intently on the viewer, while the Highfin Goby seems playful and agile, its fins spread wide as if ready to dart away. The intricate details of their scales, fins, and gills are beautifully rendered, making this engraving a true work of art as well as a valuable scientific record. This exquisite piece of natural history art is a testament to Wilhelm's dedication to documenting the natural world and his skill as an engraver. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the marine creatures that inhabited the waters of the early 19th century and serves as a reminder of the beauty and diversity of the natural world.
