EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph, taken from the new edition of Dru Drurys Illustrations of Exotic Entomology published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases a captivating array of six different species of Nymphalidae butterflies. The image features the Crisia mimic white (Dismorphia crisia 1, 2), Drurys delight (Dismorphia crisia), Mesoxantha ethosea 3, 4, and Acraea bonasia 5, 6. The Crisia mimic white, also known as the Pieris crisia or Leptalis crisia, is depicted in both its dorsal and ventral views. This small, white butterfly is known for its remarkable ability to mimic the appearance of various toxic species, providing it with an effective defense mechanism against predators. The Drurys delight, or Dismorphia crisia, is a beautiful, orange and black butterfly, also shown in both dorsal and ventral views. Its vibrant colors serve as a warning to potential predators that it may be toxic. The Mesoxantha ethosea, a species of wood-nymph butterfly, is illustrated in pairs, highlighting their striking resemblance. The males are depicted in their dorsal view, displaying their bright orange wings, while the females are shown in their ventral view, revealing their intricately patterned undersides. The Acraea bonasia, or Cynthia bonasia, is a large, orange and black butterfly, with both its dorsal and ventral views displayed. This species is known for its long proboscis, which it uses to feed on nectar from flowers. This exquisite handcoloured lithograph, produced by the renowned naturalist and entomologist John O. Westwood, offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the late 1800s and the beauty and diversity of the butterfly species found in exotic locales.
