EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Hedyosmum bonplandianum, also known as Ediosmon bonplandianum, Hediosmon del Bonpland, or Giarrè Caudata. The plant is native to South America and is a member of the nettle family, Boehmeriaceae. The illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail and ability to capture the intricacies of plant forms made his work highly sought after by botanists and collectors. The engraving shows the plant in all its glory, with its large, glossy leaves and clusters of small, white flowers. The fruit of the plant is also depicted, which is edible and resembles a small, red berry. The plant's scientific name, Hedyosmum bonplandianum, is derived from the Greek words "hedyos" meaning sweet-smelling and "osme" meaning smell, referring to the plant's fragrant nature. The botanical name of the plant was given in honor of Aimé Bonpland (1773-1858), a French botanist and explorer who traveled extensively in South America with Alexander von Humboldt. Bonpland made numerous discoveries and descriptions of new plant species during his travels, many of which were illustrated in Jussieu's Dictionary of Natural Sciences. This beautiful and historic illustration provides a glimpse into the rich botanical discoveries of the 19th century and the important role that botanical illustration played in documenting and preserving the natural world.
