EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases a vibrant assembly of Jamaican butterflies, featuring the Jamaican Banner, Soldier Pansy or Commodore, and Brilliant Nymph. The Jamaican Banner butterflies (Lucinia cadma 1, 2) are easily identified by their striking black and orange wings, adorned with white spots and a distinctive white band along the edge. The Soldier Pansies or Commodores (Junonia terea 3, 4) display their intricately patterned wings, which resemble the uniforms of soldiers, earning them their names. The Brilliant Nymphs (Acraea circeis 5, 6) exhibit their mesmerizing iridescent wings, which can appear green, blue, and purple depending on the angle of light. This exquisite artwork is taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn, London, in 1837. Westwood, a renowned British naturalist and entomologist, meticulously documented and illustrated various species of insects from around the world during this period. The handcoloured lithographs in this publication were produced using a technique that involved drawing on a limestone plate with a greasy crayon, then covering it with a thin layer of water and ink, and finally applying colour using watercolours. The Jamaican butterflies depicted in this lithograph are not only visually stunning but also hold significant scientific and cultural importance. They serve as valuable specimens for scientific research and offer a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of Jamaica. This beautiful artwork not only showcases the natural beauty of these creatures but also highlights the remarkable skill and artistry of the illustrators and naturalists of the time.
