EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the Memorial to the 49th West Riding Division, located on the bank of the Ieper (Ypres) Canal behind Essex Farm CommonWEalth War Graves Commission Cemetery. The 49th West Riding Division, a territorial force, was among the first to be deployed in the early stages of World War I, in 1915. They earned the dubious distinction of being, alongside the 6th Division, among the first to face a phosgene gas attack. The two divisions suffered over 1,000 casualties as a result. The memorial was unveiled in 1924 as a tribute to the brave soldiers who served in this division and gave their lives during the First World War. The image, taken in 2010, serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the 49th West Riding Division during the Battle of Ypres in 1915.
