EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate engraving, created by Milton after a drawing by W. Anderson, showcases a stunning collection of traditional boats from various parts of the world as depicted in Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature published in London, 1820. The image highlights the rich maritime heritage of different cultures and their unique boat designs. At the center, a Tahitian pahie canoe with an outrigger gracefully cuts through the water. The pahie, a traditional Polynesian double-hulled canoe, was an essential means of transportation and a symbol of social status in Tahitian society. The outrigger provides stability and balance, enabling the canoe to navigate the vast Pacific Ocean. To the left, a South American balza sailing raft is depicted. Balza rafts were used by indigenous communities in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins for fishing, transportation, and trade. The balza raft's simple design, with a single sail and a wooden frame, allowed it to navigate the intricate waterways of the Amazon rainforest. On the right, an English lifeboat rowboat is shown. Lifeboats were essential for maritime safety, especially during long voyages. This particular design, with its sturdy construction and rowing oars, would have been used to rescue passengers and crew in case of emergency. Finally, an Indonesian caracore with sails and an outrigger is depicted in the background. Caracores were traditional Indonesian sailing boats used for trade and transportation. The combination of sails and an outrigger provided the necessary speed and stability for long voyages across the Indonesian archipelago. This beautiful illustration, created in the 19th century, offers a fascinating glimpse into the diverse maritime traditions of different cultures around the world.
