This exquisite portrait miniature painting, dated circa 1546, captures the youthful beauty and regal presence of Elizabeth I at the age of seventeen. At this point in her life, Elizabeth was still a princess, living under the rule of her older half-sister, Mary Tudor. However, this painting offers a glimpse into the future, as Elizabeth would go on to become one of England's most celebrated monarchs in 1558, following Mary's death. The painting, part of the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, is attributed to the Flemish artist William Scrots. Scrots was a skilled painter of miniatures, and this portrait is considered one of his finest works.
