EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Pregnant Guppy N1024V undergoing construction at On Mark Engineering in March 1962, at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The conversion of a standard Boeing 337 fuselage into a unique cargo aircraft was carried out in stages. Initially, a portion of a BOAC Stratocruiser was inserted into the rear fuselage. Subsequently, the large outer shell of the cargo compartment was added to the B337 fuselage for aerodynamic and structural trials. After the aircraft flew successfully and was demonstrated to Wernher von Braun, generating sufficient interest, the decision was made to complete the conversion by cutting away the standard fuselage inside the large shell. The Pregnant Guppy, named for its distinctive bulbous rear end, was an aeronautical marvel that showcased innovative engineering and design. This photograph, taken by AR Krieger, offers a rare glimpse into the intricacies of the conversion process, highlighting the ingenuity and creativity of the aviation industry during the early 1960s.
