EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the intensity of the Russo-German naval action in the Baltic Sea during the First World War, which took place between June and July 1915. At the heart of the image is the Russian armoured cruiser Rurik, a key player in the conflict. The Rurik, with its imposing presence and powerful guns, played a decisive role in the destruction of a German destroyer and mine layer, as well as the torpedoing of a German pre-dreadnought battleship, the SMS Pommern. The map in the background provides context to the action, highlighting the strategic location of the battle between Gothland and the Russian coast. The German battleship Pommern, a pre-dreadnought, was a formidable warship of the time, with a displacement of 15,300 tons and armed with ten 28 cm (11 in) guns. However, it was no match for the Russian cruiser's torpedoes. The drawing at the bottom of the print illustrates the three naval incidents in the Baltic Sea during this period. The first incident involved the sinking of the German destroyer SMS V186, the second was the destruction of the mine layer SMS M1, and the third was the torpedoing of the Pommern. These battles were significant in the larger context of the war, as they marked the first major Russian victories in the Baltic Sea and boosted morale for the Russian navy. This print offers a glimpse into the history of the Russo-German naval action in the Baltic Sea during the First World War, a time of intense conflict and strategic importance.
