EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Ebenezer Sibly's Universal System of Natural History published in 1794-1796, showcases an intriguing assembly of aquatic and terrestrial animals. The image features a Sea Otter (Lutra marina) gracefully floating on its back, its sleek fur glistening in the water. Adjacent to the otter, a Capybara or Capibara (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris) is depicted wading through the water with its large, webbed feet. The Capybara, the world's largest rodent, is native to South America and is well-adapted to aquatic environments. In the foreground, a Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus) and a Spotted Cavy (Cavia aperea) are shown. Guinea Pigs, also known as cavies, are domesticated rodents originating from South America. They are popular pets due to their gentle nature and easy care. The Spotted Cavy, also known as the Peruvian Hairless, is a distinct breed of cavy with no fur. The engraving also includes an Agouti (Dasypus agouti), a large rodent with a prehensile tail, and a Paca (Cuniculus paca), a large, herbivorous rodent native to Central and South America. The image is further adorned with illustrations of the George Edwards's (1714-1773) representation of the Sea Otter and the Capybara. This exquisite piece of art, created by the skilled hand of Johann Ihle, is a testament to the natural history knowledge of Ebenezer Sibly and the intricate detailing of the copperplate engraving process. The Universal System of Natural History, published in five volumes, was a comprehensive work that covered the three natural worlds of fauna, flora, and geology. This engraving is a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the late 18th century, showcasing a diverse array of animals from different continents.
