EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two fascinating underwater creatures: the Shaw's cowfish, Arcana aurita, and the triangular boxfish, Tetrosomus concatenatus. The image is taken from Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was painted by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a renowned painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Shaw's cowfish, also known as the hippolyte cowfish, is easily recognizable by its distinctive cow-like spots and elongated dorsal fin. This fish is native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans and is known to inhabit coral reefs and lagoons. The cowfish is an omnivore, feeding on algae, mollusks, and small invertebrates. The triangular boxfish, on the other hand, is characterized by its unique triangular shape and protruding eyes. This fish is also native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans and is commonly found in shallow waters. The boxfish is a nocturnal species and spends most of its day hiding in crevices or burrowing into the sand. It is an opportunistic feeder, consuming a variety of prey items, including crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this engraving are a testament to the skill and artistry of the illustrators and engravers of the time. The use of handcoloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the image, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical natural history prints.
