The Sketch front cover: Mrs Ernest Simpson

Front cover of The Sketch magazine in March 1935, featuring a portrait by Dorothy Wilding of Mrs Ernest (Wallis) Simpson. The caption reads: Mrs Simpson is the beautiful wife of Mr. Ernest Simpson, and is one of the many attractive Americans in London society. She was formerly Miss Wallis-Warfield of Baltimore, U.S.A, and is the sister-in-law of Mrs. Peter Kerr-Smiley. Her centre parting and the chic simplicity of her dress are well-suited to her type of good looks. Wallis would eventually become the Duchess of Windsor when King Edward VIII abdicated the throne in December 1936 in order to marry her

EDITORS COMMENTS
March 1935: A Glance into the Past - The Allure of Wallis, Duchess of Windsor This front cover of The Sketch magazine, dated March 21, 1935, showcases a portrait of Mrs. Ernest Simpson, later known as the Duchess of Windsor, by renowned British photographer Dorothy Wilding. At the time, Mrs. Simpson was a popular figure in London society, having recently arrived from her native Baltimore, USA. Born Wallis Warfield, she was the sister-in-law of Mrs. Peter Kerr-Smiley. Her striking centre parting and the chic simplicity of her dress were well-suited to her type of good looks. The elegant image belied the historical significance that was to unfold just three years later. In December 1936, King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom, then Mr. Edward, Duke of Windsor, shocked the world by abdicating the throne to marry Mrs. Simpson. The couple's love story, filled with scandal and intrigue, would make headlines around the world. Mrs. Simpson, who would eventually become the Duchess of Windsor, was a beautiful American, having been born in Baltimore, USA. Her arrival in London society had already generated considerable interest, and her subsequent marriage to the King only added to her allure. This portrait, taken by Dorothy Wilding, captures a moment in time before the world knew of the dramatic turn of events that would make Wallis Simpson a household name. The centre parting and chic simplicity of her dress, as seen in this image, would become iconic symbols of her unique style and charm.
