EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases two intriguing spices: Zedoary (Curcuma zedoaria) and Grains of Paradise (Aframomum melegueta). The image features the Zedoary plant prominently, with its elegant white flower (a) and lush green leaves (b) unfurling from a rhizome. Zedoary, also known as white turmeric, is a perennial herb native to Southeast Asia, belonging to the ginger family. It is valued for its aromatic rhizomes and essential oils, which are used in traditional medicine and cooking. Adjacent to the Zedoary plant, tiny Grains of Paradise pods (2) are scattered, adding a pop of contrast to the scene. These spicy seeds come from the Aframomum melegueta plant, native to West Africa. The spice, also known as alligator pepper or melegueta pepper, is renowned for its pungent, slightly citrusy flavor and aroma. The seeds are often used whole in cooking, adding a warm, spicy kick to dishes. The meticulous handcoloring and intricate copperplate engraving techniques used in this illustration serve to highlight the unique beauty and intricacy of these two spices, making it a fascinating historical record of botanical wonders from the late 18th century.
