Distant view of Carn Brea, Illogan, Cornwall. 1920s

View from the north side, taken at or near the Illogan Highway. Carn Brea Castle and the Basset Memorial can be seen on the skyline. The castle was built by the Basset family of Tehidy, as a hunting lodge or folly, in the 18th and 19th century but incorporating some fabric which is believed to be medieval. The 90 foot high granite monument was erected in 1836 in memory of Francis Basset of Tehidy. He received his peerage as Baron de Dunstanville in 1780 for marching his miners to Plymouth where they made the marine fortifications safe during the French and Spanish Armada of 1779. Part of the A.K. Hamilton Jenkin collection. Photographer: Unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a distant view of Carn Brea, Illogan, Cornwall in the 1920s. The photograph was taken from the north side, near the Illogan Highway, offering a breathtaking perspective of the landscape. Dominating the skyline are two prominent landmarks - Carn Brea Castle and the Basset Memorial. Carn Brea Castle stands proudly as a testament to Cornwall's rich history. Originally built by the influential Basset family of Tehidy as a hunting lodge or folly during the 18th and 19th centuries, it incorporates elements believed to be medieval in origin. Its sturdy walls have witnessed centuries of change and bear witness to stories untold. Adjacent to this architectural marvel is the towering granite monument known as the Basset Memorial. Erected in 1836, it commemorates Francis Basset of Tehidy who received his peerage as Baron de Dunstanville for his valiant efforts during an attack on Plymouth by French and Spanish forces in 1779. His miners played a crucial role in securing marine fortifications at that time. This remarkable photograph offers more than just historical insights; it showcases Cornwall's diverse geological features with its rocky terrain, ancient sites, hills, tors, and remnants of mining landscapes. It is part of an esteemed collection curated by A. K Hamilton Jenkin but unfortunately lacks information about its original photographer
