View from the terrace at Goonvrea House, Perranarworthal, Cornwall. December 1924

The view from the terrace at Goonvrea House down the valley showing the Perran Foundry buildings below right and the bridge over the River Kennall beyond. In 1980, Rex Barratt writes in his book, Stately Homes in and Around Truro, " Goonvrea, probably built by the Fox family of Falmouth and later owned and occupied by Sir Frederick Martin Williams, M.P. for Truro (1865-1878), who was a director of the Perran Iron Foundry and the first Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons of Cornwall. Later owners were J.P. Paull, and W.E. Harris, who was there in 1939. During the last war it was utilised by U.S. troops and is now a well-known hotel". The hotel was owned by Tony and Joyce Webb and is reported to have been devastated by fire in 1982. By the early 1990s new build houses were erected on the site. The stable block remained standing and has since been converted into houses. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to December 1924, offering a glimpse into the breathtaking view from the terrace at Goonvrea House in Perranarworthal, Cornwall. The image showcases the picturesque valley below, with the iconic Perran Foundry buildings nestled on the right side of the frame. Beyond them, a charming bridge gracefully spans over the tranquil River Kennall. According to Rex Barratt's book "Stately Homes in and Around Truro". Goonvrea House was likely constructed by the prominent Fox family of Falmouth. Over time, it passed through various hands including Sir Frederick Martin Williams, Member of Parliament for Truro from 1865 to 1878. Sir Williams served as a director of both the Perran Iron Foundry and became Cornwall's first Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons. During World War II, this historic house played host to American troops before eventually being transformed into a renowned hotel owned by Tony and Joyce Webb. Sadly, tragedy struck when fire ravaged its structure in 1982. By the early 1990s, new houses were erected on its site while preserving its stable block that has since been converted into residential properties. The photographer behind this remarkable snapshot is Arthur William Jordan whose lens captured not just an enchanting landscape but also a piece of history frozen in time.
