Alexander Friedman, Soviet cosmologist
Alexander Alexandrovich Friedman (1888-1925), Russian and Soviet cosmologist and mathematician. Friedman, who lived and worked in Leningrad, is considered the founder of modern cosmology. After World War I, in 1922, he found a solution to Einsteins general relativity equations that indicated an expanding universe, a prediction famously confirmed by Edwin Hubbles observations in 1929. Friedman, though, had died in 1925 after contracting typhoid fever. Friedmans other interests included hydrodynamics and meteorology. In July 1925, he had participated in a balloon flight to an altitude of over 7 kilometres. Photographed in Russia in 1920

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of Alexander Alexandrovich Friedman, a renowned Russian and Soviet cosmologist. Born in 1888, Friedman is hailed as the pioneer of modern cosmology and made groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of the universe. Working tirelessly in Leningrad, Friedman achieved a significant breakthrough after World War I when he discovered a solution to Einstein's general relativity equations. His calculations revealed an astonishing revelation - an expanding universe. This prediction was later confirmed by Edwin Hubble's observations in 1929, solidifying Friedman's place in scientific history. Tragically, fate had other plans for this exceptional scientist. In 1925, at just 37 years old, Friedman succumbed to typhoid fever. However, his legacy lives on through his remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication to knowledge. Beyond his pursuits in cosmology and mathematics, Friedman also delved into hydrodynamics and meteorology. In fact, only months before his untimely demise, he fearlessly embarked on a balloon flight that reached over 7 kilometers above ground level. Captured here in Russia during the year 1920 with an air of intellectual intensity radiating from him; Alexander Alexandrovich Friedman stands as a symbol of human curiosity and scientific progress during the early decades of the twentieth century.
