Gender determination

Gender determination, computer artwork. Gender is determined by the sex chromosomes, X and Y. Females have 2 X chromosomes and men an X and a Y chromosome. Cells in the ovaries and testes undergo meiosis producing 4 cells (only 2 of each seen here) with half the number of chromosomes, and hence only 1 sex chromosome each. The female sex cell is an egg (pink) and the male a sperm (with tail). During fertilisation a male and female gamete fuse to form a zygote, restoring the full number of chromosomes. The sex of the zygote is determined by the sex chromosome carried by the sperm cell

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate process of gender determination. Through stunning computer artwork, we are given a visual representation of how sex chromosomes play a crucial role in determining an individual's gender. The image depicts cells undergoing meiosis in the ovaries and testes, resulting in four cells with half the number of chromosomes. Only two of each cell type are visible here - the female egg, represented by a delicate shade of pink, and the male sperm with its characteristic tail. During fertilization, these gametes fuse together to form a zygote that restores the full complement of chromosomes. It is fascinating to observe how this fusion determines the sex of the zygote based on which sex chromosome is carried by the sperm cell. Females possess two X chromosomes while males have one X and one Y chromosome. This illustration not only highlights key concepts in biology but also emphasizes our understanding of reproduction, genetics, and human anatomy. It serves as a reminder that gender determination is an essential part of our biological makeup and contributes to our understanding of hereditary traits. Science Photo Library continues to provide us with visually striking images like this one that bridge science and art seamlessly while expanding our knowledge about various scientific disciplines.
