Aurora borealis
Aurora borealis or northern lights display over silhouetted conifer trees. Aurorae are caused by the interaction between energetic charged particles from the Sun and gas molecules in the upper atmosphere about 100 kilometres up. A stream of charged particles, called the solar wind, flows out into space continuously from the Sun at speeds of 400-500 kilometres per second. On reaching Earth, the charged particles are drawn by Earths magnetic field to the poles, where they collide with gas molecules in the upper atmosphere, causing them to emit light. Photographed from Finland in early October 2002

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights. Against a backdrop of silhouetted conifer trees, this natural phenomenon illuminates the night sky with vibrant colors and ethereal patterns. The aurorae are a result of an enchanting interaction between energetic charged particles from the Sun and gas molecules in Earth's upper atmosphere, approximately 100 kilometers above us. The solar wind, a continuous stream of charged particles flowing out into space at incredible speeds from our star, plays a crucial role in creating these awe-inspiring displays. As Earth's magnetic field draws these charged particles towards its poles, they collide with gas molecules in the upper atmosphere. This collision triggers an extraordinary emission of light that gives birth to the dancing curtains and shimmering ribbons we see here. Photographed in Finland during early October 2002, this image captures nature's breathtaking spectacle at its finest. It serves as a reminder of how our planet is interconnected with celestial forces beyond our reach but still capable of leaving us spellbound. Immerse yourself in this atmospheric phenomenon that blends science and art seamlessly. Let your imagination wander among these luminous hues while appreciating the wonders hidden within Earth's magnetosphere. This photograph embodies both scientific discovery and aesthetic appreciation for those who seek to understand and admire nature's magnificent creations.
