Honey bee, SEM

Honey bee (Apis mellifera), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The head and one of the two compound eyes is at lower left, with one of the antennae and the mouthparts below and left of the eye. Behind the head is the hairy thorax, with the striped abdomen at right. Several of the six legs are also seen, along with the wings. Bees feed on the nectar and pollen produced by flowering plants, turning them into liquefied sugar (honey). They are important pollinators of these plants, carrying pollen between them on their hairy bodies and back legs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a honey bee, captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Against a striking black background, the image reveals the mesmerizing details of this industrious insect. At first glance, one is drawn to its head and compound eye positioned at the lower left corner. Delicate antennae and mouthparts can be observed below and to the left of the eye, while behind them lies a thorax covered in fine hairs. The striped abdomen on the right adds an element of visual interest. The photograph also offers glimpses of six legs adorned with tiny hairs as well as delicate wings that enable these bees to navigate their surroundings with grace.
