John Aubrey (1626-97), English archaeologist, biographer and a founder of the Royal Society. Aubrey made the first scientific study of Stonehenge, England, and proposed the idea that it had been a Druid temple, he also rediscovered the stone circle at Avebury. Aubrey studied the natural history of Wiltshire and was the first person to propose making a geological map, though he himself never made one.
