Nylon production, 1950s C018 / 0672

Nylon production. Factory worker carrying out sizing of new nylon yarn at DuPonts nylon production factory at Seaford, Delaware, USA. Sizing involves a protective coat being applied as the yarn passes over rollers. After sizing, yarn is stored in a controlled atmosphere for 36 hours to permit the solution to set. Knitters and weavers boil off the solution in the final manufacturing step. Nylon was a new material discovered by the DuPont Company in 1935. Full-scale production started in 1939, and nylon was used in a variety of products such as toothbrushes and stockings. Photographed in around the 1950s
