Parasitised aphid

Parasitised aphid (Microlophium carnosum) on a nettle leaf, artwork. The dead aphid has been parasitised by the endoparasitoid larva of a braconid wasp. The adult wasp lays its egg inside the aphid and the larva consumes its host. After the aphid is consumed its skin becomes indurated and forms a so-called mummy. The adult wasp has exited from the hole in the aphids abdomen. This is characteristic of braconid wasps of the genus Aphidus. Endoparasitoid relationships are utilised in organic farming techniques as a form of biological pest control

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the intricate relationship between a parasitised aphid and its endoparasitoid larva. The image showcases a mummified aphid, once alive but now consumed by the larva of a braconid wasp. The adult wasp cleverly lays its egg inside the unsuspecting aphid, allowing the developing larva to feed on its host until it emerges as an adult through a hole in the abdomen. The indurated skin of the mummified aphid is beautifully depicted on a nettle leaf, showcasing nature's fascinating processes. This phenomenon is characteristic of braconid wasps belonging to the genus Aphidus. Such relationships are not only intriguing but also play a crucial role in organic farming techniques as biological pest control methods. Through this stunning illustration, we gain insight into the complex world of entomology and biology. It serves as a reminder that even within seemingly small interactions like these, there exists an entire ecosystem at work. From wild fauna to agricultural practices, this artwork encompasses various aspects of nature's delicate balance. Science Photo Library presents this remarkable piece that combines artistry with scientific accuracy, providing us with an opportunity to appreciate both beauty and knowledge simultaneously.
