David Hume, Scottish philosopher

David Hume (1711-1776). Historical artwork of the Scottish enlightenment philosopher, historian and economist David Hume. Hume opposed the rationalists such as Descartes in believing that human passions ruled reason. In his A Treatise of Human Nature he tried to create a naturalistic science of man examining the psychological basis of human nature. He challenged the natural theological argument from design in his Dialogues concerning Natural Religion 1779. He is seen as a founding father of cognitive science and influenced (amongst others) Albert Einstein, Karl Popper, Charles Darwin, Immanuel Kant, Shopenhauer and Wittgenstein. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Scottish philosopher, David Hume (1711-1776), who played a pivotal role in the Scottish Enlightenment. The artwork, captured by Todd-White Art Photography, beautifully portrays Hume's intellectual prowess and profound influence on various fields of study. Hume was known for his opposition to rationalists like Descartes, as he believed that human passions governed reason. His groundbreaking work, A Treatise of Human Nature, aimed to establish a naturalistic science of man by delving into the psychological foundations of human nature. In his Dialogues concerning Natural Religion published posthumously in 1779, Hume challenged the natural theological argument from design. This audacious move solidified his reputation as an influential thinker who questioned traditional religious beliefs. Regarded as one of the founding fathers of cognitive science, Hume's ideas resonated with numerous luminaries including Albert Einstein, Karl Popper, Charles Darwin, Immanuel Kant, Shopenhauer and Wittgenstein. His impact extended beyond philosophy and permeated disciplines such as psychology and history. Henry Brougham's publication Lives of Men of Letters and Science immortalized this remarkable figure in 1846 through this historical illustration. The monochromatic black-and-white aesthetic adds depth to Hume's portrait while evoking a sense of reverence for his contributions to European intellectual thought. As we gaze upon this image capturing David Hume looking directly at the camera with an air of wisdom and contemplation; we are reminded not only of his immense influence but also how he shaped our understanding of human nature and challenged conventional notions about religion and reason.
