SDO view of the Sun eclipsed by Earth

SDO view of the Sun eclipsed by Earth. The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) is an Earth-orbiting spacecraft launched in 2010 by NASA and used to observe the Sun. Here, the Sun is seen at a wavelength of 304 angstroms (extreme ultraviolet). This channel shows areas where cooler, dense plumes of plasma occur above the visible surface of the Sun, and are seen in the upper chromosphere and lower transition region. The bright areas show high-density regions of plasma. Image obtained on 6 September 2012, at one of the two times each year that Earth blocks the SDOs view of the Sun

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures a mesmerizing view of the Sun being eclipsed by Earth, as seen from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Launched in 2010 by NASA, this Earth-orbiting spacecraft is dedicated to observing our closest star. The image showcases the Sun at a wavelength of 304 angstroms, specifically capturing cooler and denser plumes of plasma that occur above its visible surface. The bright areas depicted in the photo indicate high-density regions of plasma, providing valuable insights into solar activity. Taken on 6 September 2012, this rare occurrence happens only twice a year when Earth obstructs SDO's view of the Sun. It offers us an extraordinary glimpse into the intricate dynamics between our planet and its stellar neighbor. With its advanced technology and space telescope capabilities, SDO revolutionizes our understanding of astrophysics and solar physics. The Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) aboard SDO plays a crucial role in capturing these remarkable images by utilizing extreme ultraviolet wavelengths. This photograph not only highlights the beauty and complexity of our solar system but also represents humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about celestial bodies beyond our own planet. As we continue to explore space and unravel mysteries hidden within it, images like these serve as reminders of how far we have come in understanding the vastness and wonders present throughout the universe.
