Supernova remnant N132D, X-ray image

Supernova remnant N132D. Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) image of the supernova remnant N132D, an expanding shell of gas and dust from the explosion of a massive star. This is a rare oxygen-rich type of supernova. The colours show the energy of the X-rays: low energy (red), intermediate energy (green) and high energy (blue). N132D is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud in the constellation of Dorado and is around 160, 000 light years from Earth. The area seen here is around 135 light years across. This image was obtained in 2006, using the CXOs Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning Supernova remnant N132D, captured by the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). The image reveals an expansive shell of gas and dust resulting from the explosive demise of a massive star. What makes this supernova particularly extraordinary is its rare oxygen-rich composition. The vibrant colors in the image represent different energy levels of X-rays: red for low energy, green for intermediate energy, and blue for high energy. Located in the constellation of Dorado within the Large Magellanic Cloud, approximately 160,000 light years away from Earth, N132D spans an impressive area of about 135 light years. Obtained in 2006 using CXO's Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS), this snapshot provides a glimpse into the astrophysical wonders that exist beyond our planet. It captures a moment frozen in time when a single massive star unleashed its heated explosion into space, leaving behind a mesmerizing debris shell. As we marvel at this breathtaking sight, it serves as a reminder of both the immense power and delicate beauty present throughout our vast universe. This awe-inspiring photograph invites us to contemplate our place within this cosmic tapestry and sparks curiosity about what other celestial wonders await discovery.
