Title page from De Humani Corporis Fabrica (On the Structure of the Human Body) by Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564), Flemish physician & anatomist. The book was printed in Basel, by Joannes Oporinus & published in June 1543. It was the first accurate book on human anatomy, produced while Vesalius was Professor of Surgery & Anatomy at the University of Padua. The plate shows Vesalius (centre left) conducting a dissection in public. Vesalius left research soon after & became court physician to Charles V & later his son Phillip 11 of Spain
