Trifid Nebula M20, Hubble image C017 / 3721

Trifid Nebula (M20, NGC 6514). Combined images from the Subaru Telescope and Hubble Space telescope of the Trifid Nebula M20. The Trifid Nebula lies around 9000 light years from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius. Part of this nebula (cloud of gas and dust) glows red due to the ionisation of the hydrogen gas by the hot and bright stars born at its centre. This is called an emission nebula. The M20 emission nebula is partially obscured by a dark nebula (B85) in front of it, causing the three-lobed appearance. The M20 nebula is not all ionised, with parts of it reflecting starlight as a blue colour

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the breathtaking beauty of the Trifid Nebula M20, a celestial wonder located approximately 9000 light years away from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius. Combining images captured by both the Subaru Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope, this composite image reveals the intricate details of this stellar nursery. The Trifid Nebula's distinct three-lobed appearance is partially attributed to its interaction with a dark nebula called B85 that lies in front of it. The red glow emanating from parts of this nebula is caused by ionized hydrogen gas, which occurs when hot and luminous stars at its core emit intense radiation. This phenomenon classifies the Trifid Nebula as an emission nebula. However, not all areas within M20 are ionized; some regions reflect starlight resulting in a mesmerizing blue hue. This combination of colors creates a stunning contrast against the backdrop of interstellar dust clouds. Photographed by Robert Gendler for Science Photo Library, this awe-inspiring image invites us to marvel at the wonders of our universe. It serves as a reminder that amidst vast cosmic landscapes lie intricate formations where new stars are born and galaxies continue to evolve.
