Carriage and Wagon Stamping (No. 18) Shop in 1915
This image of the Carriage and Wagon Stamping (No.18) Shop was taken in March 1915. Although no men are in shot, it shows the busy, dirty and hot nature of this workshop. The Stamping Shop made all sorts of components for coaches and wagons, such as draw hooks, and brake rigging. During the war the Government requested hundreds of specialised carriages and wagons and the stamping shop would have been on hand to produce the relevant parts. In the centre of the photograph is a stationary boiler - the source of power for the steam hammers

Despite the absence of men in this shot, the image vividly portrays the dynamic atmosphere of this workshop. The scene is a testament to its busy, dirty, and hot nature, with workers tirelessly crafting various components for coaches and wagons. In those challenging times of World War I, when the Government urgently required hundreds of specialized carriages and wagons, this stamping shop played a crucial role in meeting their demands.
