Ol Doinyo Langai in Tanzania

Ol Doinyo Langai in Tanzania is the only volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, which is rich in calcium, sodium, and potassium, but low in silica (silicon dioxide). The lava of Ol Doinyo Lengai is extremely cool (500a'600A C, compared to 1, 160A C for typical basaltic lava) and relatively fluid. Ol Doinyo Lengai alternates between eruptions of liquid lava that form lava lakes and fountains (called effusive eruptions) and explosive eruptions that build large cinder and ash cones.
In September 2007, explosive eruptions began on Ol Doinyo Lengai, spewing ash thousands of meters into the air and covering the surrounding landscape. Explosive eruptions continued into 2008, building a cone over 100 meters (330 feet) high that enclosed a steep-walled crater. The new cone and crater are clearly visible in the center of this image acquired on September 12, 2009. The dark spot in the crater may be fresh lava erupted from a new volcanic vent. Gray ash covers the volcano and much of the surrounding landscape

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring Ol Doinyo Langai, a unique volcano nestled in Tanzania. Known as the only volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, it boasts a composition rich in calcium, sodium, and potassium but low in silica. The lava of Ol Doinyo Lengai is distinctively cool and fluid compared to typical basaltic lava. The photograph captures the dynamic nature of this extraordinary volcano. It reveals its alternating eruptions between effusive ones that form mesmerizing lava lakes and fountains, and explosive ones that construct massive cinder and ash cones. In September 2007, Ol Doinyo Lengai unleashed powerful explosive eruptions that sent ash soaring thousands of meters into the sky while blanketing the surrounding landscape. Continuing into 2008, these explosive eruptions shaped a towering cone over 100 meters high with an enclosed crater characterized by steep walls. The image taken on September 12th, 2009 vividly displays this newly formed cone at its center. A dark spot within the crater suggests fresh lava erupted from a new volcanic vent. The entire scene is veiled in gray ash which not only covers the volcano itself but also extends across much of its surroundings. This stunning visual representation allows us to marvel at both the raw power and delicate beauty exhibited by Ol Doinyo Langai's volcanic activity captured by Stocktrek Images' talented photographers.
