Marconi rotating beam transmitter at Inchkeith, Firth of Forth, Scotland. This

Marconi rotating beam transmitter at Inchkeith, Firth of Forth, Scotland.
This revolving wirelss beam apparatus projects a horizontal ray of short wireless waves which sweeps round the horizon in about 2 minutes sending out distinctive signals indicating the direction in which the beam is pointing at the moment. A vessel desiring to know its hearing in relation to the lighthouse only requires to note on a short wave received at each revolution of the beam. This indicates absolutely the bearing of the lighthouse because only on that definite bearing can that distinctive signal be transmitted by the apparatus.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Marconi rotating beam transmitter at Inchkeith, Firth of Forth in Scotland. The image captures a remarkable piece of technology from the 1920s - a revolving wireless beam apparatus that projects a horizontal ray of short wireless waves. This ingenious invention sweeps around the horizon every two minutes, emitting distinctive signals to indicate its current direction. The significance of this apparatus becomes evident when considering its practical application for vessels navigating near the lighthouse. By simply noting the reception of short waves during each revolution of the beam, ships can accurately determine their position in relation to the lighthouse. The unique signal transmitted by this apparatus only occurs on one specific bearing, providing an absolute indication of where the vessel is located. Marconi Wireless Co Ltd. , renowned for their groundbreaking contributions to wireless communication, developed this revolutionary device. Its implementation brought about significant advancements in direction finding and aerial positioning during that era. This monochrome photograph offers us a glimpse into technological progress in Europe during the early twentieth century. Preserved by Central News, it serves as a testament to human ingenuity and innovation in harnessing wireless technology for practical purposes.
