Animal jaw, Galeria

Animal jaw, Galeria. Lower jaw (mandible) of a lion recovered from Galeria. It is thought that Galeria acted as a natural trap and that humans and carnivourous animals came to it to eat the meat of the animals that had fallen in. The fossils at Galeria date back to between 250, 000 and 400, 000 years. Galeria is one of several sites in Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain, that have been studied on and off over the past century, leading to a massive advancement in the understanding of human evolution. In 2000, Sierra de Atapuerca was made a world heritage site by UNESCO

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the lower jaw (mandible) of a majestic lion, discovered in Galeria. This remarkable find sheds light on the ancient ecosystem and offers invaluable evidence of human and carnivorous animal behavior from 250,000 to 400,000 years ago. Galeria is an extraordinary natural trap where animals would gather to feast upon fallen prey, attracting both humans and carnivores alike. Situated within Sierra de Atapuerca in Spain, Galeria is just one of several sites that have been meticulously studied over the past century. These archaeological investigations have greatly contributed to our understanding of human evolution, making Sierra de Atapuerca a designated UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000. The fossilized remains found at Galeria provide a unique glimpse into early fauna and offer crucial insights into humanity's evolutionary journey. Through paleontology and anthropology studies conducted on this excavated section of jawbone, scientists have made significant advancements in evolutionary biology and paleoanthropology. This particular photograph captures not only the beauty but also the scientific significance behind this piece of history. It serves as a reminder that every bone holds untold stories waiting to be unraveled by dedicated researchers. Science Photo Library proudly presents this image as part of their extensive collection documenting our world's rich geological heritage for educational purposes across various fields such as archaeology, geography, and wildlife studies.
