Artwork of a human egg cell

Artwork of a human egg cell in the primordial follicle phase which occurs after seven months of fetal development. The egg cell is surrounded by a thick layer of follicular cells known as zona granulosa and then by zona pellucida, the yellow glycoprotein layer. The round body at the centre is the nucleus which has three endoplasmic reticulums attached to it. The nucleus contains DNA and RNA, a large quantity of protein called nucleoprotein and enzymes responsible for DNA and RNA synthesis. RNA is synthesised in the nucleolus, the sponge-like structure within the nucleus. At the bottom right is a Golgi body

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate artwork of a human egg cell in its primordial follicle phase, representing a crucial stage that occurs after seven months of fetal development. The egg cell takes center stage, enveloped by a protective layer of follicular cells known as zona granulosa and further surrounded by the yellow glycoprotein layer called zona pellucida. At the heart of this remarkable structure lies the round nucleus, adorned with three endoplasmic reticulums attached to it. Within this nucleus resides an abundance of genetic material essential for life's creation – DNA and RNA. Additionally, nucleoproteins and enzymes responsible for DNA and RNA synthesis can be found here. A fascinating feature is the nucleolus, resembling a sponge-like structure within the nucleus where RNA synthesis takes place. The attention to detail in this artwork extends beyond just highlighting cellular components; it also includes an intriguing Golgi body positioned at the bottom right corner. This organelle plays a vital role in processing proteins before they are transported throughout the cell. Through this visually stunning representation, we gain insight into not only the anatomy but also the complexity and beauty inherent within our female reproductive system. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this scientific marvel while showcasing their expertise in producing high-quality art reproductions focused on educational purposes rather than commercial use.
