Athanasius Kircher, German scholar

Athanasius Kircher (circa 1601-1680), German Jesuit scholar. Kircher worked in numerous different areas, including oriental studies, geology and medicine. His wide knowledge has led to him being described as the last Renaissance man. The Latin text across bottom includes reference to him as a Jesuit (Societ: Iefu), and states that he is aged 53 here. The location and date of the sitting is given as 2 May 1655 in Rome, Italy, and the artist is the Dutch painter Cornelis Bloemaert (1603-1692), who made other portraits of Kircher, including one in 1679. Fuldensis, in the Latin caption, refers to Fulda, Germany, near where Kircher was born

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Athanasius Kircher, a renowned German Jesuit scholar. Known for his vast knowledge in various fields such as oriental studies, geology, and medicine, Kircher is often hailed as the last Renaissance man. The Latin text at the bottom of the image identifies him as a Jesuit (Societ: Iefu) and reveals that he was 53 years old when this portrait was taken on 2 May 1655 in Rome, Italy. The talented Dutch painter Cornelis Bloemaert skillfully immortalized Kircher's intellectual presence in this artwork. Bloemaert had previously painted other portraits of Kircher including one in 1679. The mention of Fuldensis in the caption refers to Fulda, Germany - near Kircher's birthplace. In this head and shoulders depiction, we see a distinguished-looking man adorned with robes befitting his priestly status. His piercing gaze reflects wisdom accumulated over decades spent delving into diverse disciplines. As an accomplished linguist and geologist, he made significant contributions to understanding Egyptian hieroglyphics and unraveling geological mysteries. Kircher's influence extends beyond his academic achievements; he embodies an era marked by curiosity and exploration. This photograph serves as a testament to his legacy as a polymath who left an indelible mark on history.
