Calf muscles, artwork C013 / 4571

Calf muscles. Computer artwork of an oblique posterior view of some of the muscles and tendons (red and white) of the calves and their attachment to the bones of the leg. These are the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles, collectively known as the triceps surae. They originate from the lower end of the femur (thigh bone) and attach to the heel bone (calcaneus) via the large achilles tendon (white). The soleus lies under the gastrocnemius, and is seen at right where knee ligaments (white) are shown in the popliteal fossa (space at the back of the knee). These calf muscles mainly act to flex (bend) the foot at the ankle joint

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of calf muscles, offering a unique perspective on the human musculoskeletal system. In this computer artwork, we are presented with an oblique posterior view of the calves, highlighting the red and white muscles and tendons that make up this vital part of our anatomy. The focal point of this image is undoubtedly the triceps surae, composed of two main muscles: the gastrocnemius and soleus. Originating from the lower end of the femur, these powerful muscles attach to the heel bone through a prominent Achilles tendon depicted in white. As we explore further into this illustration, we discover that beneath the gastrocnemius lies the soleus muscle. Here, knee ligaments are visible within the popliteal fossa - a space located at the back of our knees. These calf muscles play a crucial role in flexing or bending our feet at their respective ankle joints. Their strength and functionality contribute to maintaining healthy mobility in our lower limbs. With its detailed depiction and accurate anatomical representation, this print offers both educational value for biology enthusiasts and aesthetic appeal for those fascinated by human physiology. It serves as a reminder of how intricately designed our bodies are while showcasing one aspect of their remarkable complexity – all captured beautifully by Springer Medizin/Science Photo Library.
