Da Vincis underwater breathing apparatus

Da Vincis underwater breathing apparatus. Drawing by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) of his design for a snorkel-like breathing tube. At the top of the device is a float, whose domed shape prevents water from entering the breathing tubes. The tubes contain an inlet and outlet valve, and the sac below the chin of the user (bottom centre) is designed to collect waste. At left, a detail of the tubes is shown: they are formed of hollow canes linked by a double helix of coiled, flexible tubing to allow more freedom of movement. Due to the increasing pressure at depth, it is impossible for a snorkeller to inhale air at atmospheric pressure at even a metre down, as the lung muscles are not strong enough to work against the pressure

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Leonardo da Vinci's ingenious design for an underwater breathing apparatus. Created in the 16th century during the Renaissance period, this illustration by the brilliant artist and inventor himself reveals his visionary approach to technology. At first glance, we see a snorkel-like tube with a float positioned at the top. This dome-shaped float serves as a barrier against water entering the breathing tubes, ensuring uninterrupted respiration beneath the surface. The intricate system includes inlet and outlet valves within the tubes, while a sac below the user's chin collects waste. A closer look at one side of this remarkable invention reveals its inner workings - hollow canes linked together by coiled, flexible tubing arranged in a double helix pattern. This innovative design allows for increased freedom of movement underwater. Leonardo recognized that inhaling air at atmospheric pressure becomes impossible even just one meter below due to increasing pressure at depth. He understood that human lung muscles lack sufficient strength to overcome this pressure disparity. As we delve into history through this monochrome artwork, we witness not only Leonardo da Vinci's artistic brilliance but also his profound contributions to science and technology. His forward-thinking ideas continue to inspire generations even today.
