Early Wright aircraft, circa 1908-11 C017 / 7836

Early Wright aircraft, circa 1908-11. The model seen here is one of the early powered aircraft built by US aviation pioneers the Wright brothers (Orville Wright, 1871-1948; Wilbur Wright, 1867-1912). The aircraft they were flying at this time were the Wright Flyer III and the Wright Model A, both made from wood and fabric, with wingspans of 11-12 metres. The engine is seen to the left of the pilot, who is in an upright seated position (prior to 1908, the pilot was in a prone position, lying down). The aircrafts elevators are at the front, rather than the rear as in later models. The Wright Flyer III flew in 1905 and 1908, with the Wright Model A flown from 1908 onwards

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the early days of aviation, showcasing one of the pioneering aircraft built by the legendary Wright brothers. Circa 1908-11, Orville and Wilbur Wright revolutionized flight with their innovative designs. The model featured in this image is either the Wright Flyer III or the Wright Model A, both constructed using wood and fabric materials. Intriguingly, this particular aircraft displays its elevators at the front rather than at the rear as seen in later models. Positioned to the left of the pilot, we can catch a glimpse of the engine that powered these remarkable flying machines. It's worth noting that prior to 1908, pilots flew in a prone position but had transitioned to an upright seated position by this time. The photograph showcases not only technological advancements but also highlights human ingenuity and determination. The brave aviator depicted here played a crucial role in testing these early aircrafts' capabilities during a period when powered flight was still relatively new. As we delve into history through this monochromatic snapshot from North America's past, it serves as a reminder of how far aviation has come since those groundbreaking flights conducted by Orville and Wilbur Wright over a century ago.
