Irrigation system, 16th century artwork. Piping brings water under pressure from an upland reservoir (centre right) to a fountain (centre) and onwards to irrigate a garden or field (centre left). Wind cherubs and a classical statue adorn the fountain. This is an engraving from a book by the French inventor and mathematician Jacques Besson (circa 1540-1573). The book was titled Theatre des instrumens mathematiques et mechaniques (Theatre of mathematical and mechanical instruments). This artwork is from an edition published in Lyon in 1596
