Lactococcus sp. Bacteria (SEM)

Lactococcus sp. bacteria. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the bacteria Lactococcus sp. Its most common application is in the production of dairy products, such as cheeses and yoghurts. Lactococcus is a genus of lactic acid bacteria and they produce just a single product (lactic acid) from glucose fermentation, unless they are altered by adjusting culteral conditions such as pH or glucose concentration. They are found in chains, in pairs or singly and are gram-positive, catalase-negative, non-motile cocci. There are strains of this genus that are known to grow at low temperatures ie. below 7 degrees centigrade. This particular sample was cultured from the yoghurt drink Benecol". Magnification x10000 (x2500 at 10cm wide)."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Lactococcus sp. bacteria, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Lactococcus sp. is a genus of lactic acid bacteria commonly utilized in the production of dairy products like cheeses and yoghurts. These microorganisms play a crucial role in the fermentation process, converting glucose into lactic acid. Under SEM, these gram-positive, non-motile cocci appear either in chains, pairs or singly. They are catalase-negative and have been found to thrive at low temperatures below 7 degrees centigrade. The significance of Lactococcus sp. extends beyond its involvement in the dairy industry; it also contributes to intestinal health as part of our gut flora. Probiotics containing strains of this bacterium are often recommended for their beneficial effects on digestion and overall well-being. This particular sample was cultured from Benecol yoghurt drink, highlighting its presence as an essential component in probiotic products that promote intestinal health. With a magnification level of x10000 (x2500 at 10cm wide), this image offers us a glimpse into the intricate world of microbial organisms that impact various aspects of our lives - from food production to personal wellness.
