Mars Express booster rocket, artwork

Mars Express booster rocket, artwork. This European Space Agency (ESA) spacecraft was launched on 2 June 2003. A Soyuz-FG rocket placed it and its Fregat booster (yellow tanks) in a parking orbit around the Earth. This Fregat booster is being used here, a few hours after launch, to place the spacecraft on its interplanetary trajectory to Mars (upper right). The solar panels were deployed after separation from the Fregat booster. Mars Express, the ESAs first Mars mission, arrived at Mars in December 2003. Since then, it has extensively mapped Mars, transmitting data back to Earth. The mission has since been extended to at least 2014

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the awe-inspiring moment of the Mars Express booster rocket's departure from Earth, marking a significant milestone in European space exploration. Launched on 2 June 2003 by the European Space Agency (ESA), this spacecraft embarked on a groundbreaking mission to unravel the mysteries of Mars. In this image, we witness the Soyuz-FG rocket placing both the Mars Express and its Fregat booster into a parking orbit around our planet. Just hours after launch, the Fregat booster takes center stage as it propels the spacecraft towards its interplanetary trajectory to Mars. The yellow tanks of the Fregat stand out against the backdrop of space, symbolizing humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and discovery. Once separated from its booster, Mars Express deploys its solar panels to harness energy from our nearest star. This pioneering mission has revolutionized our understanding of Mars since its arrival in December 2003. Through extensive mapping efforts and data transmission back to Earth, scientists have gained invaluable insights into this enigmatic red planet. Originally planned for completion in 2014, this remarkable mission has been extended due to its resounding success. As we gaze at this breathtaking artwork, we are reminded of humanity's unwavering dedication to pushing boundaries and exploring new frontiers in planetary science and technology.
