Mars glider

Mars glider. Computer illustration of the deployment of a Mars glider above the surface of Mars. The glider would be folded up in a capsule (top right) to save space on its journey to Mars on board a probe, and would unfold in the atmosphere (upper right). It would then fly a predetermined course over Mars, mapping the surface as it did so. This glider was designed for a NASA project which intended to fly a controlled aircraft on Mars in 2003 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers first powered flight on Earth. The project has been cancelled due to a lack of funds

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a computer illustration of the Mars glider, poised for deployment above the enigmatic surface of Mars. Designed for a NASA project that aimed to commemorate the Wright Brothers' groundbreaking flight on Earth, this innovative glider was intended to navigate the Martian atmosphere and map its intriguing terrain. Ingeniously folded within a compact capsule during its journey aboard a probe, this space-saving marvel would gracefully unfold upon entering Mars' atmosphere. Once released, it would embark on a predetermined course, meticulously charting every nook and cranny of the red planet's surface. With its sleek design and cutting-edge technology, this ambitious project sought to push boundaries in planetary exploration. However, despite its promise and potential impact on our understanding of Mars, financial constraints ultimately led to the cancellation of this remarkable endeavor.
