Microquasar X-ray binary system F006 / 9712

Artists impression of a microquasar X-ray binary. These binary star systems comprise a compact star (black hole or neutron star) which is in orbit about a larger companion (in this case, a red dwarf, right). The compact star distorts the red dwarf and pulls gas from its atmosphere. The gas swirls around the compact object forming an accretion disc. Particle jets are emitted from the centre of this disc, making the systems superficially similar to the much larger and totally different quasars

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of a Microquasar X-ray binary system, F006 / 9712. Crafted by the talented artist Mark Garlick, this illustration provides us with an artistic impression of these enigmatic celestial objects. Microquasars are binary star systems that consist of a compact star, either a black hole or neutron star, orbiting around a larger companion - in this case, a red dwarf. The gravitational pull from the compact star distorts and interacts with the atmosphere of the red dwarf, causing it to release gas into space. This swirling gas forms an accretion disc around the compact object. Intriguingly similar to their much larger counterparts known as quasars, these microquasars emit particle jets from the center of their accretion discs. These powerful jets create stunning visual displays against the backdrop of deep space. The artwork's dark background accentuates every intricate detail captured by Garlick's skillful hand. It serves as a reminder that even within vast expanses where darkness prevails, there exists astonishing phenomena waiting to be discovered through astronomy and astrophysics. With its blend of scientific accuracy and artistic interpretation, this piece invites us to contemplate both our place in the cosmos and our insatiable curiosity about these cosmic wonders.
