Milky Way galaxy

Milky Way. Computer artwork of our galaxy, the Milky Way, seen from above. This image is based on measurements of the galaxys stars taken in infrared, radio and other wavelengths. Many of these stars are obscured in visible wavelengths by gas and dust clouds. The position of our Sun is shown by the bright yellow dot (lower centre), about halfway out from the nucleus (yellow) in one of the spiral arms (blue). The colours seen here are due to the old, yellow stars of the nucleus and the hot blue light of the new stars forming in the arms. The Milky Way is thought to be around 120, 000 light years wide, and to contain some 100 billion stars

Astrophysics Computer Cosmology Galactic Galaxy Milky Way Nucleus Spiral Star Stars Universe Face On Plan View

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the mesmerizing beauty of our very own Milky Way galaxy. Created through a combination of infrared, radio, and other wavelength measurements, this computer artwork provides a unique perspective from above. The image showcases the vastness of our galaxy, with its spiral arms stretching outwards in shades of blue. In the center lies a bright yellow dot representing our Sun, positioned about halfway from the nucleus towards one of the spiral arms. The colors seen here are a result of two contrasting stellar populations - old yellow stars at the nucleus and hot blue stars forming in the arms. However, many stars remain hidden from visible wavelengths due to gas and dust clouds that obscure their view. The Milky Way is estimated to be an astonishing 120,000 light years wide and believed to house approximately 100 billion stars within its cosmic expanse. This illustration offers us a glimpse into the intricate complexity and grandeur of our galactic home. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring artwork by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of how small yet significant we are in this vast universe. It ignites curiosity about what lies beyond our familiar celestial neighborhood and sparks wonder about the countless mysteries waiting to be unraveled in space exploration and astrophysics.
