Moon structure, artwork C017 / 0769

Moon structure. Cutaway computer artwork showing the internal layers that make up the structure of the Moon. The Moon has a diameter of 3476 kilometres. The outermost layer, known as the Regolith, is a covering of loose, heterogeneous material overlying solid rock. It includes dust, soil, broken rock, and other related materials. Under this is the crust (brown) overlying the mantle (beige). At centre is a small solid inner core (not shown) surrounded by a fluid outer core (blue). The Moon is geologically dead. As it has no atmosphere or geological activity, its surface is still marked by craters from meteorite impacts from the last four billion years

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Moon Structure" offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the intricate layers that compose our lunar companion. Created by artist David A. Hardy, this cutaway computer artwork reveals the internal composition of the Moon with remarkable detail. With a diameter spanning 3476 kilometers, the Moon's outermost layer is known as Regolith. This loose and heterogeneous covering consists of dust, soil, broken rock, and various related materials that overlay solid rock beneath. The brown-colored crust rests above the beige mantle in this illustration. At the center lies a small solid inner core surrounded by a fluid outer core depicted in blue hues. It is fascinating to note that despite its barren appearance, devoid of atmosphere or geological activity, our Moon bears witness to countless meteorite impacts over billions of years - evident through its crater-marked surface. The scientific field of astrogeology delves into understanding celestial bodies' geological aspects like this moon structure. This artwork serves as an invaluable resource for planetary scientists and astronomers alike who seek to unravel mysteries about our solar system's rocky neighbors. David A. Hardy's skillful annotation adds depth to this visual representation of the Moon's internal structure. As we explore beyond Earth's boundaries and venture further into space exploration, such illustrations become crucial tools for comprehending distant worlds like our enigmatic lunar companion
